Equine Cutaneous Amyloidosis in Horses

This uncommon disease results in multiple hard nodules to form under the skin of horses. The overlying skin looks normal.

Equine cutaneous amyloidosis, Congo red, non-polarized left, polarized right.

Additional information

Painless cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules due to amyloid can occur in the skin of the horse. Internal masses may occur as well. In some cases lesions temporarily regress, only to return and become chronic. Nodular lesions can also occur in the nasal musosa, causing upper respiratory obstruction.
