Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia in Horses

Description
Autoimmune hemolytic anemia is rare in the horse, but cases have been described. Diagnosis rests on ruling out other causes of anemia in assocation with positive tests for autoimmunity such as a Coomb's test. Petechia and signs of a bleeding disorder such as epistaxis and hyphema may be present if there is associated thrombocytopenia; platelet clumping in blood samples that contain EDTA can cause pseudothrombocytopenia. Immune mediated anemia has been seen in horses with neoplasia.
